Would you care to hand to the Commission, if you have it or can you

make it out, a list of persons whom you think might harbour enmity

against you?

A. Yes, I prepared a list at your request. (Hands list to Chairman).

All your enemies, Mr. Chen?

Chairman:

A. I have not put your name, sir. (Laughter).

A.

Q.

I see the first name on this is Kr. Dun whom you have already mentioned?

Yes, he is no longer employed in the Immigration Office.

Have you any first hand knowledge of why he severed his connection with

the office?

Certainly, it was I who made an investigation of his activities.

What was the trouble?

A.

He was removed from the office by the 1.0. for dishonesty. He had per-

suaded-I don't know whether I could use the word "compelled"

certain

junior officers to pay him a certain amount of their monthly salaries.

What is usually known as "squeeze"?

Q.

A.

Yes.

Q.

A.

And he was convicted of that and his services terminated?

Not convicted but his services were terminated.

lir. Bertram Carmichael Hobbs, A.I.0: I have been boarding ocean going ships

since 17th February of this year and I have dealt with an average of

two ships a day. On a number of occasions I have been compelled to use

small motor boats commonly called Walla Wallas because no police motor

boat or launch was available. When telephoning to them for the use of

a launch in rough weather the Water Police xxx were invariably rude and

uncivil and on one occasion when I telephoned myself I was asked "why

don't you get a launch of your own?" I could only assume that they did

not wish to be helpful or even to co-operate with a new government

department. Consequently in rough weather when the coxswain of the

Police motor boat placed at our disposal refused to go out I engaged a

small motor boat. As an instance of obtaining co-operation from the

Police in the use of their motor boats I quote the following instance....

I don't want to interrupt you Mr. Hobbs. But we are limited to

certain terms of reference and in so far as the lack of proper transport

uld be held to be a lack of efficiency that is germane to our terms of

reference. You have talked about the incivility on the part of the
